Duisburg truck freight hub

Duisburg, where the Ruhr meets the Rhine, is one of Europe’s main inland ports. Its trimodal terminals switch containers between barges from the seaports, rail — including long-distance trains from China — and trucks serving the Ruhr and beyond.

Rules to know

Tolls and bans

Germany charges a distance-based truck toll (LKW-Maut) on motorways and federal roads for vehicles over 3.5 t, with a CO₂ component. Germany bans trucks over 7.5 t on Sundays and public holidays from 00:00 to 22:00, and on many motorways on Saturdays in July and August from 07:00 to 20:00.

Driving time

Under EU drivers’ hours rules a driver may drive 9 hours a day (10 hours twice a week) with a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours, so one driver covers roughly 700–800 km a day.

Tips for carriers

  • Container loads need the terminal release and slot confirmed before collection.
  • The dense Ruhr shipper base makes same-day reloads common.

Questions

Why is Duisburg important for trucking?

Its inland port transfers containers between barges, trains and trucks, so many European truck legs start or end there.
