Rotterdam truck freight hub

Rotterdam is a major European seaport hub for road freight. Containers and break-bulk from the Maasvlakte, Europoort and Botlek terminals move by truck to Dutch distribution centres and on into Belgium, Germany and France.

Rules to know

Container collections

Container transport at the Rotterdam terminals is pre-announced through the port community system; check the terminal slot and release before accepting a container load.

City logistics

Rotterdam is among the Dutch cities with a zero-emission zone for city logistics from 2025, with transition periods for existing vehicles; it affects deliveries into the centre, not port and motorway traffic.

Onward legs

Germany charges a distance-based truck toll (LKW-Maut) on motorways and federal roads for vehicles over 3.5 t, with a CO₂ component. Germany bans trucks over 7.5 t on Sundays and public holidays from 00:00 to 22:00, and on many motorways on Saturdays in July and August from 07:00 to 20:00.

Tips for carriers

  • Short port runs leave time for a second load — search the port area again after unloading.
  • Inland Germany and Belgium supply return freight to Rotterdam.

Questions
