Truck freight from Germany to Italy

Germany → Italy freight crosses the Alps either over the Brenner through Austria — where Tyrol’s night ban and block dispatch apply southbound too — or through Switzerland, which has a 40 t limit, a night and Sunday ban and the LSVA heavy-vehicle charge.

Tolls, bans and documents

Brenner (Tyrol)

Tyrol applies its night driving ban (22:00–05:00), Saturday and holiday restrictions and, on busy days, block dispatch near Kufstein to southbound traffic as well.

Switzerland

Switzerland limits trucks to 40 t, bans most trucks at night (22:00–05:00) and on Sundays, and charges the distance-based LSVA heavy-vehicle fee.

Italy

Italy bans trucks over 7.5 t on Sundays and public holidays, with extra summer days. Austria charges vehicles over 3.5 t a distance-based motorway toll collected by the GO-Box.

Tips for carriers

  • Check whether the load is over 40 t before choosing the Swiss route.
  • Northern Italy’s industrial regions are the place to search for the return load.

Questions

Can trucks drive through Switzerland at night?

Generally no: Switzerland bans most trucks between 22:00 and 05:00 and on Sundays, and limits gross weight to 40 t.
