Tolls, bans and documents
Tolls
Poland charges trucks over 3.5 t through the e-TOLL system on tolled motorways and expressways. Germany charges a distance-based truck toll (LKW-Maut) on motorways and federal roads for vehicles over 3.5 t, with a CO₂ component.
Driving bans
Germany bans trucks over 7.5 t on Sundays and public holidays from 00:00 to 22:00, and on many motorways on Saturdays in July and August from 07:00 to 20:00. Poland restricts trucks over 12 t on public holidays.
Documents and rules
A CMR consignment note and an EU Community licence are required. Cabotage (domestic loads by a foreign EU carrier) is limited to three operations within seven days after an international delivery, followed by a four-day cooling-off period in that country.
Tips for carriers
- Plan the return leg before you leave: Germany → Poland freight is the natural backload.
- Check German Sunday and holiday bans when timing a Friday or Saturday departure.
- Register the truck in Poland’s e-TOLL system before using tolled Polish roads.
