Tolls, bans and documents
Tolls
Germany charges a distance-based truck toll (LKW-Maut) on motorways and federal roads for vehicles over 3.5 t, with a CO₂ component. Poland charges trucks over 3.5 t through e-TOLL on tolled motorways and expressways.
Driving bans
Germany bans trucks over 7.5 t on Sundays and public holidays from 00:00 to 22:00, and on many motorways on Saturdays in July and August from 07:00 to 20:00. Poland restricts trucks over 12 t on public holidays.
Documents and rules
CMR consignment note and EU Community licence. Cabotage (domestic loads by a foreign EU carrier) is limited to three operations within seven days after an international delivery, followed by a four-day cooling-off period in that country.
Tips for carriers
- Search from your German delivery point a day before unloading to find the return load.
- Large German retail and logistics parks (Ruhr, Leipzig/Halle, Hamburg) generate eastbound distribution freight.
