Tolls, bans and documents

Slovenia and Hungary

Slovenia charges vehicles over 3.5 t a distance-based motorway toll (DarsGo). Hungary charges vehicles over 3.5 t a distance-based toll (HU-GO) on motorways and many main roads.

Romania

Since 1 October 2026 Romania charges trucks over 3.5 t a distance-based toll (TollRo) on the motorways, expressways and national roads managed by CNAIR (except national-road sections inside municipalities’ built-up areas), instead of the rovinieta vignette; the rovinieta remains for vehicles up to 3.5 t. Romania and Bulgaria have been full Schengen members since 1 January 2025, so routine checks at their internal land borders have ended; the EU external border (for example with Turkey or Serbia) still has customs and police controls.

Italian driving bans

Trucks over 7.5 t may not drive in Italy on Sundays and public holidays, and on some summer Saturdays, according to an annual calendar.

Tips for carriers

  • Romanian carriers often run westbound with clothing and parts and look for the Italian return load — agree the reload before leaving Romania.

Questions

Are there border checks between Italy and Romania?

Not routine ones: Italy, Slovenia, Hungary and Romania are all Schengen members, Romania fully since 1 January 2025.
