Tolls, bans and documents

Borders

Romania and Bulgaria have been full Schengen members since 1 January 2025, so routine checks at their internal land borders have ended; the EU external border (for example with Turkey or Serbia) still has customs and police controls.

Tolls

Since 1 October 2026 Romania charges trucks over 3.5 t a distance-based toll (TollRo) on the motorways, expressways and national roads managed by CNAIR (except national-road sections inside municipalities’ built-up areas), instead of the rovinieta vignette; the rovinieta remains for vehicles up to 3.5 t. Hungary charges HU-GO for trucks over 3.5 t. Austria charges vehicles over 3.5 t a distance-based motorway toll collected by the GO-Box. Germany charges a distance-based truck toll (LKW-Maut) on motorways and federal roads for vehicles over 3.5 t, with a CO₂ component.

Night and weekend rules

Austria restricts trucks over 7.5 t at night (22:00–05:00) on most roads, with exemptions for certified low-noise vehicles. Germany bans trucks over 7.5 t on Sundays and public holidays from 00:00 to 22:00, and on many motorways on Saturdays in July and August from 07:00 to 20:00.

Tips for carriers

  • Plan the drive so the German Sunday ban does not catch you in Bavaria.
  • German and Austrian industrial regions supply the return leg east.
